album about the insufficiency of verbal communication and the inaccuracy of memory

I remember the testers coming to my classroom and explaining the exercise.

  you don’t even brush your teeth well, you just sit around with the brush in your mouth. watch youtube on the couch til it seems reasonable to take the brush out.

The worksheet has no instructions they said, we aren’t going to tell you what to do. Just do your best.

   i am the communicator. that leaves you, you are the mystic. if there was a time we decided, i missed it.

I remember asking how to do it, and being told they can’t help me, that’s the point

  jesus christ, i never lied, i’m bad at that anyhow.

I’m asking how to do it, not how to do it. My six year old brain can’t differentiate between the two. We know what you’re asking, it’s ok, just do your best.

  there’s plenty else that i could be focusing on. my brother moved to new mexico and bought himself a little dog.

I remember being positive I was being misunderstood, being absolutely sure they weren’t receiving the same message that I was sending. I didn’t need the answers. I needed the instructions.

  jesse, you’re my friend but your brother’s supposed to be the one who can’t keep it together, man.

I remember starting to cry.

  i woke up, you were crying from the phone call you had had. couldn’t say it out loud, you had to write it down. under the circumstances would you booty call him now?

I realize now they knew exactly what I was asking. I was the one who didn’t understand.

  i’m crouching down, i am watching the soil rubbed into your brow. you’ve always been such a good friend. tell me, who is the good friend now?

I emailed with my first grade teacher last year. He has no recollection of anyone coming to our class with an exercise like that.

  i didn’t respect fear. i turned off the lights on you, dear. i think there is something wrong here.

The ways we communicate our internal world and the ways we remember our external world — all slightly askew, working but not perfectly, broken but not entirely.

  I imagine that I saw her in the new second avenue train. she’d ask me why i’m limping, i’d explain that I hurt my leg.
