"Out on the Ocean" and "River" are two folk songs inspired by details from Langston Hughes’ two memoirs, "The Big Sea" and "I Wonder As I Wander". In the former, Hughes, while sailing on a transatlantic voyage, meets a Garveyite tailor with a unique sartorial theory of societal transformation. In the latter, some townspeople he meets in Haiti speculate that the people working to repair a road from a flood had in fact diverted the course of runoff water toward the road, ensuring themselves a few day’s paid labor. "Raul" is a song about a younger man who urges an older man to divulge his secrets and his love and his wisdom. "Arlo" is a song for our little cousin, Arlo. Louise sang these songs into a USB microphone, and we sent the files back and forth. We, Sam and Louise, have always had a family band. This is our first attempt at recording together. Thank you to Bob, Suzanne, Pablo, and Marie.

Sam plays bass, electric guitar, guitar, keyboards, and percussion. All music recorded in Sam’s bathroom in Germantown, Philadelphia and Louise's living room in West Philadelphia.
